Tapcon^® Bits

Carbide bits are used for drilling holes in concrete, brick or block with Tapcon^® concrete screws. The diameter of the Tapcons being used determines the diameter of the drill bit required. The hole tolerance is very important and the correct bit must be used to maintain correct hole tolerance. Concrete bits must meet ANSI standards to provide proper matched tolerance with Tapcon^® concrete screws.

The length of the bit is determined by the length of the Tapcons and the depth of penetration into the base material. Take the depth of embedment of the Tapcon^® and add 1/2"- this will give the usable length of the bit needed. Carbide concrete bits are designated by the overall length of the bit. The overall length is determined by adding the usable length plus the length of bit not fluted and the part of the shank inserted into the drill chuck.

There are five major categories of carbide drill bits that can be used for drilling holes with concrete screws. The categories are a function of how the carbide drill bit is chucked into the hammer drill. These categories are: straight shank, SDS or SDS- Plus, SDS –Max, Spline and Tapcon style bits.
