Tapcon® Concrete Screws

Tapcon® Standard Concrete Screw

Tapcon® concrete screws are ideal for use in concrete, brick or block base material. The threads of the Tapcons actually cut threads into the base material — providing excellent holding values.

The Tapcon® concrete screw comes in two diameters — 3/16" and 1/4", and two different head styles- hex washer head and flat counter sunk Phillips.

The bit to use with each size of Tapcon® are:

  • 3/16" diameter Tapcon® = 5/32" bit
  • 1/4" diameter Tapcon® = 3/16" bit

Each Tapcon® is coated with a Blue Climaseal® coating. This coating provides excellent rust resistance. Tapcons have also been tested in a salt spray environment for 720 hours with less than 10% red rust, per ASTM B117.

The drivers to use with the different head style Tapcons are:

  • #2 Phillips — 3/16" Flat Tapcon®
  • 1/4" Socket — 3/16" Hex Tapcon®
  • #3 Phillips — 1/4" Flat Tapcon®
  • 5/16" Socket — 1/4" Hex Tapcon®

Tapcon® concrete screws are American made and have the following approvals:

  • Miami Dade #07-0315.03
  • ICC-ES Evaluation Report ESR-1671
  • Florida Building Code FL7556

Tapcon® Stainless Steel Concrete Screw

Stainless steel Tapcon® screws are ideal for use in concrete, brick or block base material. The threads of the Tapcons actually cut threads into the base material — providing excellent holding values.

Stainless Steel Tapcons come in two diameters- 3/16" and 1/4". These concrete screws are also available in two different head styles- hex washer head and flat counter sunk Phillips.

The bit to use with these stainless Tapcons are:

  • 3/16" diameter Tapcon® = 5/32" bit
  • 1/4" diameter Tapcon® = 3/16" bit

Stainless Steel Tapcons® are made from 410 Stainless steel and are coated with a Climashield coating. This coating provides excellent rust resistance, being tested in a salt spray environment for 1600 hours with no red rust. (10% red rust per ASTM B117)

The drivers to use with each different head style are:

  • #2 Phillips – 3/16" Flat Tapcons
  • 1/4" Socket – 3/16" Hex Tapcons
  • #3 Phillips – 1/4" Flat Tapcons
  • 5/16" Socket – 1/4" Hex Tapcons

Tapcons are American made and have the following approvals:

  • Miami Dade Approved NOA No. 03-0114.03
    (1/4" diameter only)

Tapcon® Large Diameter Concrete Screws

Tapcon® Large Diameter Concrete Screw

Large Diameter Tapcons (LDT) are ideal for use in concrete and block base material. The threads of these Tapcons cut threads into the base material, resulting in excellent holding values.

The Large Diameter Tapcon® anchor is available in four diameters- 3/8", 1/2", 5/8" and 3/4". LDT are made with a finished hex washer head with anti-rotation serrations to prevent anchor back-out. The head is stamped with a length identification code and the entire anchor is zinc plated. The 5/8" and 3/4" are available with Envirex coating.

No special drill bits are required. The Large Diameter Tapcon® anchor uses standard ANSI bits. The hole size is equal to anchor size.

Stainless steel Large Diameter Tapcons are available in the 3/8" and 1/2" diameter.

The correct socket to use for each Large Diameter Tapcon® is:

  • 3/8" diameter = 9/16" socket
  • 1/2" diameter = 3/4" socket
  • 5/8" diameter = 15/16" socket
  • 3/4" diameter = 15/16" socket

All four diameters can be used in solid concrete. The 3/8" and 1/2" should only be used in CMU concrete block.

Large Diameter Tapcons are American Made.

Tapcon® Carbide Bit

Tapcon® Carbide Bit

Carbide bits are used for drilling holes in concrete, brick or block and can be used with Tapcon® concrete screws. The diameter of the Tapcons being used determines the diameter of the drill bit that is required. Hole tolerance is very important and the correct bit must be used. These carbide bits must meet ANSI standards to ensure a properly matched tolerance with the Tapcon® concrete screws.

The length of the bit to use is determined by the length of the Tapcon® concrete screw and the depth of penetration into the base material. Take the depth of embedment of the Tapcon® and add 1/2"- this will give the usable length of the bit needed. Carbide concrete bits are designated by the overall length of the bit. The overall length is determined by adding the usable length plus the length of bit not fluted and the part of the shank inserted into the drill chuck.

Words to the Wise

Be aware that not all concrete screws are Tapcon® brand. Many are imported and do not meet the same standards as the Tapcon® in type of steel, rust resistance, testing and approvals. They may be less expensive...but you get what you pay for.
